take care of your used car at the auto connection

With many of us working from home over these past few months, the average commute has gone from several miles to just several steps from one room to the other. And while you may be enjoying working from home, your car isn’t. Here are a few tips to keep your used car in top shape while you stay parked inside.

Charge your battery

Believe it or not, not driving your car really takes a toll on the battery. Even if you aren’t going anywhere, let the battery run for at least 15 to 20 minutes every few days. Taking it for a spin around the neighborhood is encouraged because it keeps the rust from accumulating on the rotors and brakes and is the best way to recharge the battery.

Check your tire pressure

Your tires can slowly lose pressure even if you aren’t using your car very often. Keep an eye on your tires and keep them properly inflated at the recommended pressure. This information can be found in your owner’s manual.

Give it a good wash

A clean car is a happy car. A parked car can still gather a lot of debris from nearby bushes and trees, as well as bird droppings, pollen, and dirt. Washing your car will not only make it look better sitting in the driveway, but it will also help preserve its paint job.

Top off your fluids

Use the time you’ve saved from your long commute to top off the fluids in your car, such as your brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, antifreeze, and windshield wiper fluid. Afterward, take the car for a short drive to help circulate the fluids better. And to charge that battery!

Check for critters

Idle cars are a rodent’s best friend. They love to make nests under the hoods of dormant cars and sometimes, they’ll even drag in sticks or nuts or chew on wiring underneath your car. If it’s been a while since you turned on your car, be sure to check underneath your hood and on top of your tires before you start the engine.
